placidus altmutter, from köfler, 'tiroler freiheitskampf'

The opposite view: in 1819, Jakob Placidus Altmutter painted the battle as seen from the Bavarian lines.

Bergisel's geographic location makes it Tyrol's gateway to the south. Due to its great strategic importance, it was the scene of several armed conflicts prior to 1809. In the third battle of Bergisel on August 13, 1809, 15,000 troops from Bavaria, Saxony and France commanded by General Lefèbvre clashed with a Tyrolean militia of equal size under the leadership of Andreas Hofer. The Tyrolean victory in this battle gave rise to the legend of 1809.
